We meet again, Reddit. For years I portrayed The Most Interesting Man in the World. Now I am off on a True adventure and I want to tell you all about it. I am Jonathan Goldsmith, back for my third AMA. Ask me anything.
Dear Friends,
After nearly a decade portraying The Most Interesting Man in the World, I am thrilled to report my life of adventure is continuing. Not as an actor. As a journalist.
Starting today, I'm joining the editorial staff of True.Ink, a new online magazine that combines tall tales with live, off-line experiences. "Live The Story," we say.
My title is editor emeritus, and along with hosting some incredible events, I’ll be penning a column called True Mastery, and writing some poetry. For those who want to stay in touch (you can sign up below) I'm offering a winner a weekend in Vermont.
Fishing. Hiking. Martinis. On me. You coming?
For proof this is me, to enter my contest and to sign up for my newsletter go here.
Thanks for having me Reddit and great to be back. Running for the train. Have a deadline, but will be back soon and stay in touch with me at True.Ink/Goldsmith
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama731 karma
Easy. Step 1: Find wonder. Step two: Emulate it.
Thank you, BTW.
MattBaster1026 karma
Is writing a relatively new venture for you, or do you have previous journalism experience?
And seriously, now that no one's listening... what do you really think of Dos Equis?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama2011 karma
I've been writing poetry since kindergarten.
Also happens to the same time I discovered my affinity for the femme form.

Have you ever met anyone who could challenge the "Most Interesting Man Alive" claim?
And, who would you say is the Most Interesting Woman Alive?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama2026 karma
Who would challenge the Most Interesting Man alive?
They're all dead.

What is one area you feel that everyone man should have "True Mastery" of?
InfernalWedgie474 karma
As a True Master of Chivalry, how skilled are you in the art of riding a cheval?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama1288 karma
Cheval? You mean the distant cousin of Equus caballus? What do you think? I used to breed them.
ChrysMYO604 karma
Which of the brags on the XX beer commercial were the most accurate to your real life?
And did you use the guy that does the voice overs during the commercial to interview for your current job? If so, how much does he charge for use in my own job inteviews?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama1265 karma
Naturally, my affinity with animals—and their affinity with me. I've fed a tiger cub his milk and then returned years later to feed him in his cage. Hawks, snakes, rhinoceros, pumas... All friends to me.

Has KFC asked you to be the world's most interesting Colonel? If they did, would you say yes?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama1829 karma
She sat next to me. Her hair was flaxen, face freckled and laughing eyes. We were madly in love. She was an Italian model, in town from Milan. Or was it the Bronx? I don't remember. I was eight.

I get a lot of crap from my friends because I enjoy ballroom dancing...but do you ballroom dance as well?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama712 karma
I tango, often on the floors of ballrooms, so yeah. You're friends should your admire your passion for dance. I do.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama622 karma
As Mark Twain said, "Never go anywhere unnoticed."
Case proven. Thanks for remembering!

MIMITW, what would you say are the top 5 virtues someone should have if they aspire to be the most interesting man in the world?
Thanks for coming back to Reddit!
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama762 karma
Here they are, spread your fingers:
1.) Compassion 2.) Integrity 3) Tenacity 4.) Endurance 5.) Mastery of the Kama Sutra (note my byline in the acknowledgements of that tome of course)
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama301 karma
Thank you my friend. Love to hear more and stay in touch with me at True.Ink/Goldsmith

Your status as the Most Interesting Man could clearly have a lot of influence. Assuming you could convey a message to the world and use your influence, what would you want to encourage everyone in the world to do?
linkankit244 karma
When YOU meet someone, what do you look for in an individual to truly classify him/her as 'Interesting'? In other words, how does the most interesting man in the world classify someone else as 'interesting'?
Also, do you think this charm/charisma of the individual is inborn or developed over time?
Thanks for the AMA. Huge fan!
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama884 karma
First rule. To be interesting you have to be interested. In life.
Second rule. Interest isn't enough. You have to experience the incredible parade that's passing you by.
Not as an onlooker. As a participant. Jump in.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama363 karma
Let's have a look. Send C.V. to True.Ink/Goldsmith
What's your primary qualification?
nevinator23181 karma
If you had to choose, would you say the role of "most interesting man in the world" is more of a reflection of your personality? Or is it more of an inspiration into this new career and who you are today?
edit:better wording.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama294 karma
I put a lot of myself into the character, felt an affinity for him :) My new role as editor emeritus continues the same spirit, savoring the world around me, celebrating what makes a good life tick
nevinator2385 karma
So as editor emeritus do you plan on personally engaging to go out and find the stories or will you let them come to you?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama173 karma
It's interactive. Some ideas will be my own. Some stories may come from readers like yourself. What ya got?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama98 karma
Will do both. Some stories will be own; others will be inspired by readers and others. Perhaps even you. What you got?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama626 karma
Checked it out. Food not great. Hard to get a good pour. Here I am. Glad to be back.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama576 karma
As Goethe said, 'Anyone who doesn't understand the last 3,000 years of history is living foot to mouth." No knowledge of past = no knowledge of today. See Will Durant, Story of Civilization (along with a classic comics, got me through college.)

First, I love you and all that you do. Congratulations on the editor position!
My question is this: Has there ever been a time in your life when you felt lost and/or depressed as if you were the Least interesting man in the world? How did you pull yourself out of it?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama524 karma
If you have not felt lost, how do you know once you've arrived? If there is no pain, what does pleasure feel like? I've been there. This is life. You are not alone. Treasure the Dawn. A new day, new possibilities. New attitude. Also happens to be the name of the poem I published today. Can find it on True.Ink/Goldsmith best to you my friend
Tykotylerf144 karma
Hi Jonathan, I love you works. Have you ever made a voicemail for someone before? Would you make a voicemail for me using your amazing voice? I'd love to have someone call and have your voice tell them to leave a message.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama622 karma
Maybe.
Under the right circumstances, leave no bizarre opportunity behind.

Where is your most favorite place you have traveled? What did you like about it?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama333 karma
Many are special. Even a white room with the right friends. But a secret key in the Bahamas comes to mind (can't share the lat/long) but we were boarded by armed military personal (twin fifties, bright lights) a few beers later, we had the laughs of our lives, not to mention pics of second wife in cuffs! Goes to show: you can inspire anyone with the right attitude (and fear of prison.)
Ohm_eye_God104 karma
Hello MIMITW,
With all of your knowledge from reading, what do you think about the ancient astronaut theory? (that our species was helped in some way by extraterrestrials in the past)
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama195 karma
I've met some of those people once, actually. We had a round table on Mars. I cooked. Made them my famous lamb chops in Roquefort sauce.
Ohm_eye_God91 karma
So what are your thoughts on Cambozola cheese? I think it's the best cheese in the universe.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama210 karma
I concur. Certainly, a top contender however it's a cow's milk cheese and considering my affinity for sheep (I delivered one once) and goats (they're quite playful) i remain neutral on this important topic.
Ohm_eye_God107 karma
Thanks for your concurrence. If you're still here, what's your favorite scotch? Mine is Ardbeg 10.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama264 karma
My very good man. I just so happen to have a bottle in my bag. And just poured out a nip in our honor. True story. Viva Islay!
Ohm_eye_God112 karma
Damn sir you are awesome. Would love to meet you, just to taste cheese and drink scotch together. I'm a 53 year old straight guy from Kentucky so no worries. Holla!
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama187 karma
This is what my new adventure is all bout. Your stories, as well as mine. Stay in touch at True.Ink/Goldsmith and I'll keep the bottle of Ardberg 10 somewhat full for us when the time comes...

If you could give advice to all the young folk that read this, what would it be?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama248 karma
Follow your dreams, but don't forget to wake up and activate. We'll be getting into more of this in True Mastery, my new column. Love to hear more about "young folk" experiences — learning is a two way superhighway
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama247 karma
Here is all I can confirm. We have received a couple calls from interested parties that are understandably concerned about the current state of affairs. Myself and my advisors decline all further comments about that position at this present time.

I find that one interesting thing a man (or woman) can do is cook. Do you like to cook? And if so, what is one of your favorite things to cook? And if you happen to have a recipe, that would be very interesting.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama205 karma
I love to cook and cook often. I'm cooking right now actually....
The kitchen is always closer to the bedroom with the right menu.

Will throw in the rib recipe too!

Did you ever suggest any ideas to be used in the Dos Equis commercials? Or was there an idea that was scrapped that you would have liked to portray?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama126 karma
The commercials were great, but what I'm up to now is an unfiltered take. This is me. The ideas are boundless, the poetry is all original. Not a character. Not behind a curtain. I am here and ready to hear about you, my fellow travelers. Like I said, learning goes both ways.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama166 karma
Big concern. We must each do our part in being mindful stewards of our earth. To think climate change isn't real? A dangerous thought.

If you could have a baby with any other man past, present, or fictional (assuming it's possible) who would it be?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama140 karma
The birth of my first born. Absolute proof of the following and in no particular order: love, awareness, divine architecture.
dansoccer35 karma
I don't always ask a question on AMA but when I do, I ask 2!
Did you film any XX commercials that did not get aired? Is there a personal brag that wanted to film but did not get to?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama56 karma
Bragging. I try not to do. More than likely, some cuts don't make it. I don't recall, though familiar with the cutting room floor.
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama114 karma
Closely Watched Trains. A Czech picture. Touching. Poignant. A young man struggles with his arrival at manhood.
Never ending story, don't you suppose?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama56 karma
Also did I mention The Entertainer (with my favorite actor, Sir Lawrence Olivier.)
klamonic129 karma
If a movie was made about your life, what actor (besides yourself) would play you?
Iam_jgoldsmith_ama84 karma
I cannot confirm that a motion picture is being made about my life and times, but if I could, and if it were, I can reveal the following short list of colleagues I treasure. Ed Harris. Al Pacino. Sir Lawrence. If only he was still around.

Sure you can. That's part of my role as True.Ink editor. Sharing adventures with brave folks like yourself. I'm raffling away a fishing weekend with me in Vermont. My gear. Special martini. Enter at True.Ink/Goldsmith but the leave the alligator and cobra at home
