Having a book banned usually means you wrote clearly about some uncomfortable truth adults want to hide.

Books are most commonly banned in school districts, which means the book is not available in the library nor is it taught in any of the classes. If a student is to be found with it, it may be confiscated (or not) and will probably be available again to the student at the end of the school day with increasing punishments for continuing to violate the ban over time.

The same goes for at a town level. The book would not be available in a town funded public library or any school district in town. It might even restrict sale of the book in that town. Given that this doesn't actually pass a law against possession of the book (usually) you can freely own it. This would be very unlikely to survive a challenge in court.

An individual store 'banning' a book would basically just be the key decision-maker for the store (owner, manager, whatever) deciding to not have the book available for sale in their store.

Given the mobility of the population of the US and the increasing mobility of students between school districts (for good or ill) banning books is a somewhat ridiculous and outdated concept. To illustrate how ineffective a ban on anything that is otherwise available in the US is at the town or city level, I grew up in a smaller town in Michigan. Our county had a law on the books that prohibited the sale of alcohol on Sundays. While this might be inconvenient for people in the middle of the county part of our town was actually in the county to the south of us. If you happened to have forgotten to buy your beer for a Sunday NFL game, you could just drive 5 miles south and buy it there.

I might have been overstating the situation, because if you find me a US teacher that would support a ban of a book, well, I don't know what I'd do, because I honestly don't believe that teacher exists.

It's fucking hard to get a book banned in the first place, to the point that the American Libraries Association finds it more relevant to list the most challenged books instead of the most banned.

Hi Dale, what's your over/under on how many more seasons before Justin Verlander gets his first hit in the majors?

I know LARPers that have a currency that's actually backed by a reserve (alcohol). They're literally closer to having a country by dicking around than these people trying to have a country.
