I'd personally like for the Smithsonian to do this project in chunks. For an example:
Take the Tollund Man's artifacts (his tools, weapons and so on) and scan them all in detail.
Several sets of various military infantry equipment. Imagine a scanned replica of a WWI fighting trench filled with period accurate models of the tools and equipment they used.
A total scan of the objects found in or known to have been associated with famous scientists. Imagine having a full scan of Madam Curie's lab!
A practical application for such large undertakings would be both scientific and educational. Imagine taking a virtual tour of Einstein's office/lab complete with all of his equipment and notebooks and so on via a VR interface like the Occulist Rift http://www.oculusvr.com/
Tour a virtual battlefield with the same aforementioned technology in stunning detail.
This technology combined with the Smithsonian's vast archive of historical artifacts holds the potential to revolutionize how future generations view science and history. Don't mess this up Smithsonian ;)

Hey Soraya:
One thing we seem to hear little about is what happened to the captured police/militia. Any word on how they were treated?
