They use stuff like negging (backhanded compliments) and forms of emotional abuse to get their way in a relationship and brag about being real men or "alpha" because of it.

Toxic masculinity isn't having a lumberjack beard and powerlifting while simultaneously smoking a cigar, drinking single malt scotch, and splitting wood with a splitting axe. Toxic masculinity is saying that doing those things is what REAL men do and that any man who doesn't isn't a real man. It's a specific form of gatekeeping that's pretty common in real life.
