I am graduating high school in June, and instead of a graduation party and present, my family and I decided we want to go on a trip. It was originally a cruise, but rather than spending $2000 for 3 days, we are now thinking of an actual trip, possibly out of the country (live in the US). Where do you suggest? We want something family friendly (decently low crime rates), with enough things to do, and something that isn't a 14 hour plane ride. And thanks for this, I love traveling and not only do you have a great website, but this is a great AMA.

Hey there! I go to Ramapo College, and you played here this past April as part of our Spring Concert with The Maine and Mayday Parade. Awesome show!
How was your experience?
Is there anything that would have made your experience better? Our first meeting for planning our Spring Concert of 2014 is coming up this Sunday, and want to know what to suggest to make it a better experience.
Thanks, and can't wait for the new album!

And this is why if I drive, I only drive in NJ :) With my luck, I'd have 19 miles in gas left and be 20 miles from Jersey. It's actually more expensive in Pennsylvania than in NJ (or at least where I am).

If you fly within the US, I've gotten cheap deals by taking connecting flights, but really just going to the connecting city. This only works if you don't have checked bags though. For example, I live in NJ and needed to get to Florida. Our flight from Trenton, NJ to St. Augustine, FL was cancelled. Most flights for the next day from Newark, NJ to anywhere in FL were $400+. I found a deal that was Newark to Orlando to Gainesville, FL for under $200, and because we only had carry-on luggage, we just didn't take the connecting flight. Opened up seats on the next flight for a couple of folks on standby, so it all worked out.

(I know you probably won't answer this until after the fact) Are you going to stay in New Orleans for however long, or taking the bus straight back to Texas? I've been following the situation, and my parents are criticizing every decision Carnival makes, and all I can say is "They are trying to do their best with everyone in the world angry at them." We are actually looking at cruises, specifically Carnival as well, for my high school graduation, guess I'm not going on the Triumph. I think we are looking at either Liberty or Freedom, I forget which.
