Could the planet have moons, and if so, how big could they be?

Could you elaborate? What would a lack of moons indicate, for example? Or a Saturn-style mess o' moons?

If there was a particularly large moon, for example Earth-sized or bigger, would it impede the visual search for the planet? Basically the mass of the primary would be smaller than expected, and therefore more difficult to spot.
