As someone who was in and out of juvenile detention as a teenager, the staff that actually cared and believed in me made a HUGE difference in who I am today and helping me get out of the lifestyle I was in.

No question, just wanted to let you know that no matter how much we act like we couldn't give less shits about you, you really do have the power to make a difference.

Honestly most of the kids who were doing the same shit as I was are all doing good now. Your job really does make a difference and those kids can change, it just takes someone believing in them and giving them some direction.

Talking to me like I was a human being rather than just their job and doing little things to cheer me up and make me feel like someone really did care. Like if I was having a really shitty day, something as simple as making a joke to cheer me up, or letting me pick the movie for the night.

For me being in there was the only time in my life where I really felt worthless and helpless. It's incredibly frustrating to have no control of your own life, not even what and when you eat.

Be trustworthy, keep the secrets that you can, and if there is something you HAVE to report, make sure they know why and that you're going to do it.

Trust me, of you genuinely care about them, they'll know, and that's all it really takes to make a difference.
