As someone in IT, this is completely normal for software licensing now. You use to just buy software, then have to pay for upgrades, now it's all subscription based (all is an overstatement, but most are going that way) To say it's to get the lazy is not true, sure there are some, but at the same time, the lower cost of entry also means people who wouldn't pay $50 up front would pay $2 or $3 to get started and then find out they like it. Unless op is hiding the fact it's a subscription then there is nothing shady about this.
