Aspartame is most certainly not toxic to everyone. The studies saying otherwise were frauds. Aspartame has been proven to cause no ill health effects to the vast majority of the population when consumed in moderation.

It's expensive because the architecture varies so greatly between systems. That's one of the main reasons why the PS3 fat models cost so much - they had actual PS2 hardware in them (i.e. the Emotion Engine CPU and the Graphics Synthesizer GPU) to be able to play PS2 games - and is also why their was such a reduction in price, size, and consequentially the loss of PS2 BC with the Slim models. PSX games required such minor hardware they can just be emulated, but that wasn't the case with how hardware-intensive PS2 games were. PS2 introduced one of the earliest multi-core processors to the consumer market if I remember correctly.

It amazes me how so many people still don't know just the gist of this, and go around acting like Sony is against backwards compatibility. There's a difference between being against something and actual market viability.
