This varies from state to state. Some states have one central office where you can record a judgment and it creates a state-wide lien on any real property. This is how it works in New Jersey. In other states, you have to record a judgment in every county you want it to be in effect. This is how it works in New York.
Find out how your state handles judgments. It is not uncommon for the debtor to sell his/her house and the title insurer to find a judgment. The buyer will have to cut you a check to ensure that there is no cloud on the title. It may be 5 or 10 years down the road, but eventually you should get your money. Cross your fingers.

Speaking from experience: boutique law firms are feeling the squeeze as well due to increased competition. All the ex-biglaw partners are now trying to compete and retain the price-conscious clients.
