I should be more careful about what I say. I cant find the link that suggests he actually was involved in the mining, but the mining companies did use his portrayal of the Yanomami to justify moving in to their territory. Chagnon actually founded organizations that are trying to help mitigate the damage done to the indigenous communities by mining, diseases and industrialization. He is a controversial man.

Then you sir, are scary. I have actually had a moment in my sailing experience of the crew and I hiding belowdecks clutching machetes off the coast of venezuela being followed by some dirty scowling motherfuckers with guns who were not the navy who pulled up next to our vessel and stayed there for about an hour and only left when a panama airforce plane buzzed us a couple times. You guys all look like kids having the time of your lives. Cool pictures by the way, I miss sailing.

I believe I read somewhere about how Chagnon had investments in gold mining and he wanted to portray the Yanomami as "violent savages" so that the western world wouldn't intervene or care if the big mining companies wanted to go there and tear up the landscape.
