Tottenham was one of the largest Jewish areas of London and the club has always been associated with the Jewish community. The term was originally used by other clubs fans towards Tottenham-fans as a derogatory term, so the Tottenham fans started using it themselves to "disarm" the term.
It is now simply used as slang for Tottenham-supporter and has lost almost all of it's original meaning when used in this context. The fans for instance chant "yiddo" to the players or other supporters as a honorary term and call themselves "yid-army".
Edit: Some clubs fans still sing and chant antisemitic songs/chants towards Tottenham-fans, some of which are really bad, i.e. making hissing-sounds. This has been one of the arguments against Tottenham-fans using the term as some feel the fans are "encouraging" use of antisemitic songs etc. against them.

As a Jewish player, what is your opinion about Tottenham-fans calling themselves yids? Ever since that lawyer association made a bit of noise against it this has been a discussion that pops up from time to time, also among the Tottenham-fans. Would be interesting to hear you view on this.
