As someone who was raped as a child I have a hard time having sympathy for pedophiles, but I do recognize that you are right. No one is going to go to a "Pedophiles Anonymous" meeting and say "Hi, I'm Frank, and I'm a pedophile. It's been 102 days since I last looked at child porn."

It's too much of a social stigma for that (and really, it should be a social stigma). Anyone who will admit to being a pedophile is usually not ashamed of what he (or she) is.

I was raped as a child, and it screwed me up mentally from the time I was 7 until I was about 22. And while it does not affect me any more, I'll never get my childhood back, nor my teen years for that matter.

My lack of sympathy comes not just from the fact that they want to have sex with children, it comes from the fact that they are willing to permanently disrupt/harm/destroy an innocent child's entire life just so that they can get their jollies off. It takes a sadistic person with severe mental issues to be willing to ruin a life just to get off. And I have trouble having sympathy for people who are willing to ruin lives for their own pleasure.

More than half of teachers quit within 3 years of becoming a teacher. You either learn to cope with being in the system and helpless to change it or you give up on your dream of making a difference.

Generally speaking, of course.

Do you feel that part of the problem is low expectations owing to their surroundings? Meaning that kids who are reading at a 4th grade level whilst everyone else is reading at a 2nd grade level feels that they are the smartest kid in the class and that that is good enough? To go along with that, since all the other kids are reading at a 2nd grade level does the average kid simply accept that he is where he is supposed to be; simply because he only has his classmates to compare himself with?
