It really sounds like you are doing great work. I was just wondering, since you mentioned that this was not your first choice job, was that because of state of impoverishment of the school district? I am a college student studying to be an elementary teacher, and I really do not have a clue on what type of school district or where I would like to teach.

Also, you mentioned that students often lollygag on their way back from the free breakfast. I recently just finished a course all about literacy in the classroom and we read several books on the importance of reading aloud in classrooms, even for middle and high school students. There were several accounts of secondary education teachers that read aloud at the beginning of each class and that would cut down on late or tardy students. I was wondering if you had tried this technique at all. Obviously you have way more experience than I do, but I was just curious how read-alouds came into play in higher levels of education.
