Speaking for Navajo's, anything that is either 1st or 2nd clan is considered your brother or sister (clan relation wise but possibly by blood depending on location). 3rd is known more for your maternal grandparents clan and 4th us paternal grandparents clan. Depending on each family, sometimes 3rd and 4th are ok depending on the section that they are in.

Native Americans in the media is a negative stereotype for most of us. In regards to sports teams, it is ridiculous. A good example is the Cleveland Indians. There mascot literally looks like the racist doll of Sambo (I beleieve it was called). The whole war paint, war bonnets, tomahawks are ridiculous. Native Americans in movies still has it wrong and is still demeaning (example: Lone Ranger). It just makes Native Americans still seem uneducated and unable to adapt.

The reservation I'm from is very dry and has a desert landscape. High temps in the summer and cold winters. Local economy is never really booming. There isn't much of a job market or an economic viability for businesses to come to the reservation. There may be one grocery store (bashas), 6-7 gas stations, 2 stop lights, 10-15 restaurants, 5-10 fast food places, 2 school districts (k-12h). It is an open reservation and anyone can come to visit without any type of checkpoint or such so you might have actually drove through one without knowing it.

There isn't a lot to do on the reservation I was from. In order to go to the movies, buy bulk grocery (sams club, wal mart), we had to travel 70 miles to the nearest town to do those things. No night life what-so-ever unless you like to drive around the open rez which is what I did in high school with friends.
