I really hate to sound cold, however, with that type of attitude, the world will rapidly run out of doctors. I agree with everyone else in saying that what happened to you was beyond terrible, but as you said, people make mistakes.

If it was an honest error, would you be willing to settle for say, the hospital/doctor paying for half of the adoption/surrogate process?

I'm torn between punishing people for an honest error, and the devastating results and Allowing professionals a margin of error.

If you punish professionals for an honest mistake, people will no longer be willing to get into that profession. I'm a professional driver, and scared poopless about making an honest(meaning not deliberate error) and maiming or killing someone. No one is perfect.

How do you deal with family that arrive too late? Some background on the question.
My mother died 363 days ago. I was 12,000 miles away on the other side of the planet when the doctors told the family to gather up, as she was in a medically induced coma. They could not keep her alive long enough for me to get back to where she lived. I was pretty pissed and I couldn't find a doctor or nurse to tell me what happened. All there was was an RNA and I couldn't yell at her.

Down vote for the guy below me :) Thank you for the reply. As a result of your AMA, I'm pretty sure Ill go for a third or fourth opinion, however sometimes they do not give you that option.

I have had something sort of similar happen to me, but hard to say if will have the same long term psychological results. If you want the details, feel free to pm me, I'm not quite as comfortable as you are putting up personal details on an AMA!
