I have a podcast, and on this podcast I interviewed a (different) Legends of the Hidden Temple contestant. He had a pretty good practical answer about why the monkey gave contestants so much trouble. Basically, the pole on the top piece is so long that a kid could run into trouble getting it above the base if you were grabbing it by the head. You can see this illustrated here.
