Well, I don't see any problem in using a more "down to earth" kind of language.

People are treated as individuals of a free mind and will, at least in most countries. It is recognized that we can think and act for ourselves, and we are therefore left to make our own decisions in life - albeit with some legal restrictions.

Now imagine somewhere down the line, we achieve a similar level of complexity in computers, something many futurists hope and dream. Should we not allow them the same rights? They would be, depending on our coding of course, individuals, and would be capable of making their own experiences and thoughts. Okay, maybe this still is a bit philosophical, but surely you have some opinion?
