I was invited to my girlfriend's house in Japan and was told that the grandfather is a 90 y/o WW2 vet that fought on Okinawa (one of the bloodiest battles of the pacific for either side). I was expecting hostility or some sort of resentment, but he was the kindest old man that laughed at my jokes. He saw me hold his granddaughter's hand and smiled a knowing smile at me even though I was introduced as just a friend. A true class act. My point is this: humans have the most amazing capacity to forgive and forget.
Edit: clarification
