For now, I have this question: is the issue in our contemporary capitalist system relying on the industry of fossil fuels and the corporate power resting in those industries, or simply the nature of capitalism itself requiring persistently greater energy consumption?

In the hypothetical, would it be possible to have a regulated capitalist system which prevented the development of heavily destructive industries in non-renewable resources, thereby continuing capitalism's trend in aiming for greater energy consumption but restricting it from the oil, coal, and similar industries?
