I am not Sophie but I can give you my perspective...

As a generalization, FB employees do not think it is horrible for world. Is it perfect? No. The average Facebook employee thinks that it is no worse - or even better - than other platforms like Reddit, Twitter or Youtube. Facebook employees feel that it gets disproportionately more blame than the other platforms that deserve more criticism. Especially Youtube.

Facebook employees are frequently reminded of the positive impact it has around the world. Every week there are short videos created internally that tell a story on how Facebook was used for good.

The news media is very negative on Facebook. This is often explained away as Facebook being in direct competition for their customers: advertisers. There is an appeal to this argument. Likewise, a lot of the news reports that I was intimately familiar with left out important details or falsely mischaracterized a situation. This makes it harder to trust the news reports. Not everything written about Facebook is 100% correct. It becomes difficult to blindly trust a news report when you have observed blatant mistakes in previous reporting.

Facebook treats its employees very well. It pays them well. It feeds them well, for free. Your colleagues are incredibly smart. It is very open with ideas. The opinion of Facebook inside the company is much different than the opinion outside of the company.

Were you interviewed by Cecilia Kang and Sheera Frenkel for their new book on Facebook? What did they ask you about?
