It means the same as teaching, and the verb derived from it means to teach, meaning there's a lot of confusion when using the noun. If you put it in a sentence eg. 'Ja uczę się nauki' it could mean I'm learning a teaching' or 'I'm learning self-teaching'. 'Nauka' can also be used to describe school and learning in general, which also makes it sound weird when saying 'I'm learning science'. Also not many schools in Poland teach science, they instead teach chemistry biology and physics separately which may contribute to this. Interestingly on google trends mentions for 'nauka' keep declining with high spikes in September, when the school year starts.

Can confirm as a bilingual speaker of Polish and English. In polish one of the most frustrating lexical gaps is the word for 'science'. It exists as the word 'nauka' but is awkward to put in a sentence so instead I've actually heard people using the german equivalent 'Naturwissenschaften'.
