Patrolling the Mojave makes you wish for a nuclear winter

Well, that's human nature. Sure, we want to help people based on our morals, but our instincts come before everything else, since they are hardwired into our brains as a first survival response. Put it plain and simply, immigrants ARE foreigners. Outsiders. An unknown element. You do not know their intentions in your familiar environment. You are instinctively distrustful as they are an outsider to your group of neighbors.

To grossly simplify, most probably be able to offer sympathy to a story of a man who had to get out of his abusive household. But if he came and sat with them and their friends out of nowhere, they'd probably be a bit uncomfortable and distrustful of that person, because they don't know his intention or even if what he says can be trusted.

Now, of course I'm not saying this is definitely the case, but that's what I see.
