Hey thank you for doing this AMA as I think this is a wonderful subject and an integral part of our cumulative heritage.

I saw quite a lot of rock art in Arizona and the South West US when i lived there and thought it was beautiful. As an Illustrator though I'm curious, the paintings i saw seemed to be mostly story telling tools or symbolic things like the handprint walls. Was art ever done for some of the same reasons we have today? Was there any early human painting a facial portrait on a cave somewhere, Or keeping inventory of the animals or landscapes he saw as opposed to just drawing his last hunting trip? Whats the most technical/skilled drawing you've seen amongst the ancient rock art? Was it always cartoons and stick-figures (still an amazing feat and no less impressive) or is there any rock art that could resemble the beginning of realism?
