The reason you see CBD touted as a miracle cure-all is that it manipulates our endocannabinoid system, which regulates a long list of automatic things our body does, like stress response, sleep, appetite, inflammation, and much more. This system is in most mammals and evolutionarily predates the appearance of cannabis by millions of years. So CBD can IMPACT or INFLUENCE a broad array of symptoms. How much it helps can depend on method of application, dosage, individual bio-chemistry and something called ‘the entourage effect.’

Along with CBD, there are over 100 other identified substances naturally occurring in cannabis that can also influence the endocannabinoid system, but those are even less well understood than CBD. Anecdotal evidence points to CBD being more effective when combined with at least some of these other endocannabinoid influencers, like THC. This is called the entourage effect.

I think the best way for the lay person to investigate CBD is to first learn about what the endocannabinoid system is and how it works.

To get a more specific sense of how and why CBD has come into the medical mainstream (and why states started to feel confident in legalizing cannabis) read about the strain known as Charlotte’s Web. It is a pretty moving story.

Thanks for doing this AMA, Mr. Gates, it totally took me by surprise to suddenly see this today. I only have one question: Are you a Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda or Samantha? My wife thinks you're a Carrie, but I always figured Charlotte with a little bit of Miranda. Thanks!

I hear so much about the breath when it comes to mindfulness meditation, but can you speak about other physical aspects of practicing mindfulness? What other activities can induce a sense of mindfulness or do different activities like yoga or playing music bring about mindfulness in different ways?
