When I was a kid, I thought it was "Mama save, mama save, my Microsoft"

Dear Flea. I am sitting awake till late in the night here, but it is worth it, because I have been looking so much forward to this AMA. The RHCP was the first band I ever really became a fan of: I find it amazing that your music can be so deep and real, but still so easily accessible, and I think you are one of the only bands to have so successfully achieved that. Also, while I don’t play much slap bass, you definitely were one of the major reasons I became inspired to learn to play bass; an activity that has brought so much joy and happiness ever since I played my first note.

My question to you is this: What has been the toughest period to go through of the band’s long history? Were there ever times where you felt it wasn’t worth it, and if so, what kept you together?

It means anything that is obviously hateful towards any particular group of people. Historically black people and jews have been especially vulnerable targets. The right to hate speech should be absolute for many reasons. Here are some:

  1. If hate speech is outlawed in some form, it gives a few people—the politicians who propose the laws, the civil service which formulates them, and the judge who interprets them—the full power to control the speech of the people. If only these few positions are corrupted by similar interests, any opinion made against those interests can be silenced with force under the guise of doing away with hate speech.

  2. To quote Sam Harris: "It is illegal in France and Germany and a few other countries in Western Europe to deny the holocaust. That's a bad law. A person should be absolutely free to deny the holocaust. Which is to say he should be free to destroy his reputation. And others should be free to ridicule him and to boycott his business. There shouldn't be a law against this kind of idiocy."

  3. The ultimate truth can only be found when all ideas are allowed to be expressed equally. Many things that are considered true today have historically been denied by, or simply been unbeknownst to, the majority of populations. To outlaw hate speech is to silence a minority that could technically be right, and therefore it is an act against humanity's search for truth in the world.

I could go on for long, but you get the point. If anyone is interested, I can recommend Aryeh Neier's 'Defending My Enemy,' which is an excellent book on the matter.
