Not to mention the damage to the earth in getting the materials to make the solar cells.
My 4th year project involved indium-tin metallic heterojunctions for thin film solar cell applications. When I was researching indium, I found out how rare it is, and how poor the countries are where it's found. Finding, extracting, and processing it takes a lot of energy and is quite toxic.
Plus, purely from an energy in vs energy out standpoint, a lot of solar takes something like ten plus years to break even by generating the same amount of energy that went into manufacturing them

Meanwhile up in Canada, I'm looking at $1.14/L which is approx $4.42 /Gal. Even with the exchange rate, it's $3.52 USD / Gal
