Do you have any good tips on effectively using social media?

Before trying to sell an idea to a company should I have at least a provisional patent on file or is proof that I've been working on an idea enough to secure my claim to it? Thanks

Lori, what is the best way to go about getting a patent? I have some ideas but I haven't really looked into having them patented yet.
