It's caviar. It's not the expensive Russian stuff; it's sold in tubes like toothpaste. It's a very popular sandwich topping. Bit of an acquired taste, though.

I think that the English versions are generally adopted from Icelandic, which is why they are different from Scandinavian pronunciations (Odin - Oden, Thor - Tor, Loki - Loke). Frankly, I believe the Icelandic pronunciations are closer to the original, so I'd say the English made the right call.

It just sat there in my open kitchen window for about an hour, completely unfazed by my being there. I sent the picture to my mother who dusted of the old ornithology handbook, and she says it might be a quail.
