Off the cuff theory: he felt guilty for letting his sex drive get him in trouble and decided to "fix" his problem. That or maybe he knew some other inmates wouldn't approve of him threatening to rape nurses and they would have done it to him when he got out, so he did it himself.

The scariest thing to me about humans is even the insane do things for "logical" reasons in their own minds... the logic (if you can uncover it at all) is very close to regular logic but a few seemingly unimportant factual details warped and that leads to really weird shit. There are a lot of people who are genuinely insane but continue to function in society because harmless things like believing that God will save your soul if you hoard every cat you see isn't really something we're afraid of.

Geez, sounds like you should have a good answer for this- any tips on finding a good lawyer, doctor, etc?

If you were in his position would you have given the bread or not? Giving it is kind of a sign of weakness, could lead to more abuse, not giving it leads to immediate death?
