Is ISIS mostly a militia trying to gain power in a certain region, or are they actually more motivated by ideology and religion? And if so, what sets them apart from competing factions and states?

Nope. The physical dollar and euro take a lot of resources to be made, but this is only a fraction of the total amount of dollars and euros. The bulk of it is made with the stroke of a key at the central bank.

Now I'm all in favour of Bitcoin but the waste of energy in mining isn't its most glorious feature. Proof of work is still the best way to protect a coin though, but perhaps some altcoin figures out a better way to do this and Bitcoin could adopt an alternative system.
