I have to say that this is not true. I live in Sydney and have worked bars for many years (although I now work in another industry). Tipping is not required in the same way that it it in the states, in that people get paid something like $3p/h. Hospitality staff make something like $18p/h minimum. That being said, if you liked your meal, it has become something of a custom to leave a tip. It's not like over there where you have to leave 10-20% of the cost;just leave a few dollars as "thanks"
