I have very, very loud tinnitus as well. The easiest way I've found to explain this to someone is to download a tone generator app and play it at a loud enough tone that it's just out of what I can hear. Most people say it hurts their ears, but I can't hear it anyways. I guess if you can't hear at all then starting at a high pitch and going down until they hear it would work?
