Do you think artificial neural networks are the best means of reaching singularity or do you think there are better algorithms that will mimic intelligence?

An experiment to measure whether the universe is a simulation was recently proposed based on the idea that a simulation will have to use step-wise time functions to simulate everything. Do you have any thoughts on the idea that the universe is very much like a computer simulation? Similarly, do you think that the universe is analog?

I see you did your post-doc in Seattle. What did you think of the area? I am curious if you think crowd funding is a good alternative to the falling budget of the NIH/NSF. I am planning to do a kKckstarter campaign to fund a project to create a hair loss drug (which I discovered during my research experience as a grad student) but I might consider Experiment.com as well.
