Ugh that's awful. Any violence is awful, but "just for the sake of it" is pretty much the worst, ESPECIALLY when you have no idea what unlucky person is going to catch those stray bullets. Someone miles away and safe could happen to take one of the "shot in the air" bullets.

One thing that has been great about previous NASA missions is that they often last longer than were initially planned. (I'm thinking Voyager and Spirit, though they certainly weren't the only ones).

Does the potential for extended longevity play into mission planning for New Horizons? Do any of you have a list of unofficial "pipedream" items set up in the event that the mission lasts longer than what is currently forecast?
