Totally agree. How come is a company still the owner of a dead artist's work?

For me it's still interesting to think what would really happen if the artists just ask for donations for their work. I imagine it as a digital street musician. Would an author really make a living only with said donations?

An example comes to my mind: the time Radiohead released In Rainbows. It's an anecdote, but many of my friends downloaded it for free. I actually did payed (like $5) for it. But shortly after that, they released a vinyl version of it, which costs a whole lot more than a regular mp3 album or CD.

I think for mainstream musicians it won't be THAT hard to make a living out of it, but I'm not sure about starting artist.
