The same for most of Europe, when you enter prison, you need to show your papers to the other inmates, so they know who they're dealing with.

My situation was a little bit complicated : i was locked up in Germany. No one spoke English or my language there except for an American. Anyway, we got in touch with the English Speaking Prisoners Support Group in Munich, it works with the Catholic Church ( I never got any religious talks except when I picked the subject, so it's not set on converting people ), and they picked a penpal for each of us. And the correspondence goes through that group ( a church address ) so your private name and address are confidential. I think it's best for you to search something inside your country, easier both for you and especially for the prisoner.

I don't know if I am allowed to write here, sorry if I break any rules but I had a penpal in prison from a church organization, and it helped me a lot, carrying normal conversation, he was sending me prints of news, interesting articles , discussing books, movies, all the usual stuff you would do outside, but don't really have the chance on the inside. Makes you feel normal.

Don't know if people would be curious about a German prison... But whatever you do, don't get stuck in a Bavarian one... Absolute hell ( this coming from a guy who knows the prisons in ex-communist countries )
