How did bands of protesters get such formidable military might? At one point their numbers had to be small, was there aid from the start from those aforementioned "other governments"?

What are the likely outcomes for the region; Syria is an area of huge historical importance, what should become of it should the government win, lose, or other? I know this is opinion based so I can understand if you cannot answer.

Your answer makes it seem like the media here in the US is right. It sounds a bit odd to me that the Syrian pres. would outright attack peaceful protesters given the outcome to nearby leaders doing the same thing, even considering the curtain of protection from Russia, it's a gung-ho move that does not benefit the pres. or the country in any way. Even letting the protests continue for this long would have led to much better outcomes. Could there be another explanation? In my experience the simple explanation is usually the answer in everything but politics, and this case seems like a candidate of such given the escalation of the issue and the circumstances.
