We talked with our staff last time and according to our head waiter, out of the per person gratuities you pay he made something like $8 and the lowest level assistant server about $1. He said they made no other wages, just that gratuity. Of course they are taking care of quite a few people at one time but still, they don't make a lot.

I always feel somewhat bad cruising, because I know the staff work very hard and very long hours for what amounts to meager pay. But on my cruises I've gotten to know some of the staff, and while the money isn't great by our standards, for someone from the phillipines who would otherwise be doing manual labor, it's a pretty good gig and they feel lucky to have it. Since they have almost no expenses, they are able to send almost all the money back home to support their families and do so with much more money than they would have back home. They've always told me the worst part about the job isn't the hours or the pay, they're grateful for the pay, the worst part is being away from their families for 6 months at a time.

That said...if you go on a cruise, remember they work hard and living conditions aren't great, and they're making a huge sacrifice to support their family. Be nice, the way some cruisers treat the employees just makes me angry. Also, as a general rule everyone I interact with on the cruise ship gets slipped cash under the table on top of the gratuity you automatically pay through the agency.

I really want this to be real, but on the internet anyone can be Michael Ian Black.

I think it's a selection bias, that is, most girls on reddit who are willing to post a photo are pretty or at least not ugly...
