Edit: My original point is too glib; obviously the newsworthiness is not just because of the level of violence, but (as a start) also because the process in Egypt is one of revolution and subsequent state building, with consequences for Egyptians, Arabs and human history generally. The US protests may be about something substantive but their impact so far is marginal -- and the difficulties they're facing are almost entirely trivial.
