Yes, please answer this. There are still many of my generation (say gen. X and Y) who consider him to be the most important writer of our time. Not because of the obvious points: the erudition, the long sentences, the footnotes. But because of the compassion, the purity of intent, and, above all else, the heart-breaking beauty of the prose.
