Oh gosh, my mom had asked about her sister (who'd died the year before, and I was on a business trip...my husband reminded her of the loss and she grieved all over again because "Nobody told me!" and she'd just forgotten.) He felt awful, but just didn't anticipate that reaction.

"She's doing fine, she called and said hi, remember? I'm sure she'll send a nice card for Christmas" was the right answer here, because I'd dealt with it before.
