Yeah, prison, at least in the United States, is supposed to be a deterrent so you don't fuck up again. Unfortunately it rarely works and often inmates come out learning more about how to commit crimes and get away with it, or like the OP posted about before, drug additions, they learn how to con, etc. I am sure there are statistics (probably by state and country) on the recidivism rates but I am not that motivated to look them up. Basically, if you go to jail/prison once, you are so much more likely to end up back there again, than someone who has never been before.
