That was literally what Nick Clegg did in the UK General Election in May. His entire line was "I'm not as bad as Labour, and I'm not as bad as the Tories".

It didn't work out well for him though... He went from >40 MPs and the role of deputy prime minister to 8 MPs and a great deal of embarrassment...
