One of my friends has defaulted on payments and been sent to debt collection agencies. This is NZ so may be different where you are, but he can no longer:

Sign on to rent a house, sign up for power/phone services, put anything on finance (like a car etc), and will be unable to do any of these for several years even after they have repaid the collection agencies.

You need at least neutral credit for everything.
