Hi, Californian landscaper here, right now fake turf isn't as much of a thing as most people would think down here. Its really expensive, where as there are turf rebates available up to 3$pet sqft of turf removed as long as it's replaced with plant material that is more drought tolerant, just not turf.

When most of the homes were built here, they all had the same similar plan. Ivy, junipers, big lawns, etc. The big appeal back then was having a lush green yard. Water wasnt a concern back then. People are definitely embracing the xeriscaping more now then before.

Oh don't get me wrong. Long term fake turf will save you more money. Water process go up on average 18% every year. Not to mention penalties if you are in a tiered water district. But the state is pushing the rebates and that's what the people have been going for. If done right you can have 0 up front cost, have the contractor collect the rebate and pay nothing for a new front yard that will still save you water and maintenance in the long run and won't cost an arm and a leg up front. Small yards make sense to have fake turf for sure, especially if they still want the green lawn look. But hoa's that have anywhere from 20k to over 200k sqft of turf, are definately going to pay for rebate and flowing plants over demanding special assessment fees from residents to lower water bills. Again not down playing fake turf, this is just what has been trending in the area.
