My high school English teacher (and I'd trust him on this one since he was like a 70 year old vet who has read more than anyone else I have ever known) told me a story about the 50th anniversary at Gettysburg that when on of the Southern Soldiers was told to shake hands with one of the Union soldiers he spat on the ground and walked away, saying something like "I wouldn't shake hands with him then and I won't shake hands with him now".
