Yes it was quite different. I never saw a tv until my folks moved back to the states. My reality was Disney movies, short wave broadcasts and playing outside. I was 12 before I watched tv, had a bike or rode in a car.

There was no social media back the on course but I think I grew up more self sufficient. By that I mean I had to learn how to make do with less to just get around. I rarely had a flashlight to use so navigating by moonlight from the village home was a learning experience.

The only lights were on the schoolhouse which were double wide trailers. We lived in one half. The airport, trading post and the church all had power. But the natives lived in the earthen huts with nothing but kerosene for lights.

Ahh nice, so now I understand that quality about their coffee I have always hated. Now I know why I only go there if there is no other choice in the matter.

Did you ever go over to Alakanuk? Maybe around 1967-1972? I lived there with my teacher parents during then.
