I personally don't really enjoy 'nerd rap' because it's not something that I can relate to, but I very much support your statement here.

Humor in hip-hop is a slippery-slope. Even beyond PE/NWA there were funny skits in so many of the major hip-hop releases through the 90's. Wu is a good example. It bled a bit into the 2000's as well. Dipset has great skits. That was just something you did. Now though if someone's really goofy they can be quickly written off as a joke (Lil B, Riff Raff, etc.) Odd Future had it work in their favor and landed a comedy show.

But if you're white and goofy, that's probably the hardest shit to overcome. I've entered into arguments about this topic when talking about Riff Raff a lot lately. People see a funny, goofy white dude rapping and he's just a joke. Even if his roots [in Swisha House and houston shit in general] are super obvious. I'm sure if I showed them a 3rd Bass video their heads would explode.

I feel like the super-backpack fans lack the most for humor. They never seem to be able to pick up on the deliberate fun in artists like Gucci Mane/Waka Flocka/etc. I guess some of it is just because most of these fans seem to be young, white middle-class dudes, but it still irks me. The underground doesn't have to be super serious.

I know the rappers I'm mentioning are worlds away from you and your audience, but I just wanted to say that shit haha.

Random related story:

My dad was stationed at RAF Mildenhall when I was starting HS. That year my German class was taking a trip to Germany. I'd been ti Germany so many times already my parents definitely didn't want to spend the money. They were flying commercial and it was mad expensive.

Anyway, all of my friends from that class went and apparently snuck off a bunch of times to smoke weed with a random German dude they met. They then got caught trying to bring back weed (and maybe other shit). I can't remember if they were caught before or after the flight. They were suspended for the longest time I've ever seen.

I wonder what kind of trouble they got in for that. I moved soon after that and never got the whole story.

Also, question for you or anyone: is it extra illegal to bring/have drugs on base (especially in a foreign country)? We were never really extra cautious.

The cops in WA basically said they'd be chill for a bit after the legalization, but to remember it's illegal in public.
