Dairy farmer here. Just buy local. Go to farmers markets. Go to local butcher shops. Ask a farmer for a tour. Our cheese plant will take consumers to our farm and others in the area. We're up front with what we do and why we do it.

If you're worried about animal welfare, don't blindly buy organic or cage free. Most likely if its being sold at a large grocery store, organic does not mean happier animals.

Another easy way to avoid animals treated like this: don't buy chicken, beef, or pork. Buy bison or venison instead of beef. Much leaner, tastes better and factory bison or elk farms don't exist. Instead of chicken eggs, buy duck eggs. You can buy all different kinds of dairy products that don't come from cows - goat milk, sheep milk, water buffalo milk. Try some emu meat, its delicious and they are only farmed on pastures.

Also, don't forget you can go hunting and fishing.
